Great Buildings often make great pubs, and The Dovedale Towers is a great, iconic building.

The building itself has seen many incarnations throughout the years; originally known as Grove House, home to the mysterious Mr (not Colonel) Kurtz, hugely wealthy industrialist and a prominent supporter of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, it passed through guises as an orphanage, a Russian embassy, a guest house which, in 1969, housed a certain Farrokh Bulsara (never heard of him? Google him) and was of course once St Barnabus’s church hall where a certain Sir Paul McCartney was a choir boy and later played here with both the Quarry Men and The Beatles at which time it was a major venue on the Mersey Beat scene.  Various establishments made its home within its walls throughout the following decades, until 2009 when it sadly closed its doors.

Now we’ve all spent many hours in pubs and restaurants criticising and pontificating about what you’d do differently if it was yours, so when you see your local boarded up and gathering dust you quickly realise it’s time to get involved or quit the game.  So, we took our local and saved it with the aim to make it a refuge for diners and drinkers alike. Part community hub, part drinking den, bright open spaces mixed with quiet secluded corners. Big flavours and rough edges A place for good food, good beer, good stories, good music with good friends and all manner of events and functions. It’s an act that can be difficult to pull off, but we think we do it quite well.

At the risk of sounding somewhat parochial, we also try to keep it local. We’re locally owned and locally ran. We use the best local produce and ingredients we can, we buy from family owned companies whenever possible and we change our menus in partnership with our suppliers throughout the seasons. We believe that having close personal relationships with both local businesses and guests helps create a sense of identity and character, a sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.

So, you can find us at 60 Penny Lane, there beneath the blue suburban skies…
